Street Politics: A Method for Non-Violent Resistance?

This lecture challenges you to think and talk about the politics and the non-violent acts of resistance. OtherWise invited the philospher and anthropologist dr. Femke Kaulingfreks to present her work on different forms of political involvement by revealing the role of ‘street politics’. Kaulingfreks focuses on the use of various non-violent methods from a political-social perspective and uses examples from Dutch street culture as well as from elsewhere in the world. In this lecture questions such as “What is the relevance of the cultural aspect of (street) politics?” and “Where does "culture" enter politics and vice versa?” will be discussed. These questions will open a debate about the idea that nonviolent resistance can be carried out in many different ways, many of which would generally not be seen as 'political' and thus remain underexposed.

This open guest lecture is the opening of the Capita-Selecta course ‘Methods for Non-Violent Resistance’. In this 3-ECTs course, we will explore non-violent ways in which people take matters into their own hands and actively embody or promote creative alternatives to the status quo. OtherWise offers this eight weeks Capita Selecta course with the aim to inspire 3rd year BSc and/or MSc students to explore their own potential to bring positive change to this world by creating space for debate, connection and action.
