To our regret we have decided that the activities of next week cannot continue due to the Corona virus outbreak. We were looking forward to celebrate the lustrum week of OtherWise together, but with the situation now, this would not be ethically responsible. We hope to postpone these activities and to celebrate the lustrum another time.

Art and humor are a vital force in protests. Also in the political protests in Nicaragua, the neighboring country of Costa-Rica. In 2018, farmers, women, students and other civil groups took the streets against the government. They accused the government of oppression, environmental neglect and unsocial reforms. The answer of the government: killing 300 protesters, putting hundreds in prison ánd censoring the media. To continue their fight, students and journalists had to turn to new means of expression: humor and art. Cartoons are an important way of expression, so we will focus on this media during this workshop.

During the event a Nicaraguan student, who applied for political refuge in the Netherlands, will talk how she experienced the unrest. A Nicaraguan living in Wageningen will relate to the cartoons of the famous journalist Pedro Molina. At the end, we will express our own feelings about social uprising in the world by making a cartoon ourself.

This event is a part of the 20 year anniversary lustrumweek of OtherWise called 'Imagine OtherWise'. Images are able to say so much more than words, and images can help us imagine different realities. In this event you are invited to hear more about the reality of social injustice in Nicaragua and also about how art and humor can address these issues and change our perceptions.
